Bishops produced an impressive win over Paul Roos at Piley Rees on the weekend. This was not only Bishops' first win over the visitors since 2010 but this is the biggest win against the boys from Stellenbosch. The game also formed part of the Premier Interschools Rugby Program and was broadcasted live on SuperSport.
These two teams have been meeting since 1878. The previous largest win margin by Bishops' was in 1943 when they beat Paul Roos 28-10, they have drawn and lost in the last decade, but the record was demolished on the weekend when they beat the Stellies boys by 23 points!
Bishops' dominant play at the breakdown and during set pieces allowed their backs to run freely with the ball. Although the wet conditions played a role, we cannot deny the talent and passion that the Bishops' side demonstrated, making the most of their opportunities to score points.
The home side drew first blood in the second half through a well placed kick from Johnny Roche and replacement back, Rupert Holmes crossed in the corner for an excellent five pointer. The boys in blue played from deep in their own 22, a perfectly timed pass from Roche set Suleiman Hartzenberg off on a valiant run for the chalk on the opposite end of the field.
Man of the Match was well deservedly the Bishops' scrumhalf, Imad Khan who kicked two conversions and four penalties taking his personal tally 16 points in this historic 36-13 Victory.
School-boy rugby is looking really promising so far this year, its almost as though the 19 month break has done the boys well. Keep it up, you boys are playing top class rugby!
