Boks rotate for Scotland

The Springboks head into week two of the Nations Championship full of confidence after their emphatic 45-21 victory over England last weekend, but Rassie has wasted little time in turning his attention to the bigger picture.

True to his word, the Springbok coach has named a vastly different side for Saturday's Test against Scotland at Loftus Versfeld, making 10 changes to the starting XV as he continues building squad depth ahead of a demanding international campaign that still includes Rugby's Greatest Rivalry later this year.

Rather than settling on a preferred combination, Erasmus has made it clear that 2026 is about creating genuine competition for places and exposing as many players as possible to Test rugby.

Only five players who started against England retain their places in the run-on side. Jesse Kriel, Damian Willemse, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Paul de Villiers and Ruan Nortje all get another opportunity after impressive performances in Johannesburg.

Du Toit will captain the side for a second consecutive week following Siya continued absence through injury, while Willemse comes into the match fresh off celebrating his 50th Test appearance.

Speaking after naming his side, Erasmus said the rotation policy had always formed part of the Springboks' plan.

"We told the players from the outset that we would give as many of them a chance as possible to play this season, while we are also trying to manage some players, while others are not available for selection this week, so it was important to select a team with some continuity from last week, while bringing in players we believe will be the right fit for what we are expecting from Scotland."

The Bok coach also warned against underestimating the visitors.

"They had a good Six Nations campaign, and they come off a victory against Argentina away, so they will be psyched up going into this match."

The new-look backline sees Aphelele Fassi return at fullback alongside Edwill van der Merwe and Canan Moodie in the back three. Damian Willemse partners Jesse Kriel in midfield, while Handré Pollard and Embrose Papier form an exciting halfback pairing on familiar ground at Loftus Versfeld.

For Pollard, the occasion carries extra significance. The flyhalf made his Springbok debut against Scotland in Gqeberha back in 2014, a match South Africa won comfortably, and will now once again guide the side against the Scots more than a decade later.

Up front, Erasmus has opted for an entirely new front row of Boan Venter, Johan Grobbelaar and Wilco Louw. Cobus Wiese partners Nortje in the second row, while Evan Roos joins Du Toit and Paul de Villiers in the loose trio.

De Villiers is rewarded with his first Test start after making a composed debut off the bench against England last weekend following Kolisi's late withdrawal.

Several players will also enjoy the advantage of playing on their home ground, with a strong Vodacom Bulls contingent featuring throughout the matchday squad.

"Many of the players will also be playing at their home ground at Loftus Versfeld, so they know the field and conditions well," Erasmus said.

While the Springboks have opted for fresh combinations, the squad still carries considerable experience. The starting XV boasts a combined 445 Test caps, including 274 in the backline alone, underlining the balance Erasmus is trying to strike between developing depth and maintaining world-class quality.

History also favours the Springboks heading into Saturday's encounter.

South Africa have won 25 of their 30 previous Tests against Scotland, an impressive win rate of 83.3%, and have beaten the Scots in each of their last nine meetings since the defeat at Murrayfield in 2010.

Interestingly, despite the long rivalry between the nations, Saturday's fixture will mark the very first time Scotland have faced the Springboks in Pretoria. Although they have played at Loftus Versfeld before, including during the 1995 Rugby World Cup, they have never previously met South Africa at the famous venue.

There is another milestone edging closer for Du Toit. The double World Cup winner will earn his 97th Test cap this weekend, leaving him just three appearances away from becoming the latest member of South Africa's prestigious 100-Test club.

Scotland will nevertheless arrive with confidence after an impressive victory over Argentina and a strong Six Nations campaign, something Erasmus believes his players are fully aware of.

"They are a quality team, who will test us in all areas of the game, and they are well coached, so they will throw everything they have at us.
"Matches against them are always tough, and looking back, there have been some very close encounters between the sides in the past, so we need to be switched on from the first whistle, be accurate in all departments of the game, and use our opportunities if we want to get the desired result."

Kick-off at Loftus Versfeld is at 17:40 on Saturday.
