Varsity Cup Brilliance

The Varsity Cup in 2021 has been nothing but glorious, seeing some exciting new talent taking the pitches across the country. I am sure we were all expecting a wild tournament this year, after an intense lockdown that hit this time last year. The players have been aching to get back out there and show some magic.

I will tell you for free that this tournament has shocked me big time. I was expecting a dominant Stellies side to walk through the season. But it has been a bit of a battle for the defending Champs. Whilst we see big performances from the UCT Ikeys, walking through five of their six performances, with a win against the defending Champs in the opening round. Hopefully we can see the gents take the momentum into the final this year.

There is no shortage of talent in South Africa, we have some of the fittest, fastest and strongest youngsters in the world, and it shows in the quality of rugby being played this year specifically. The physical battle between the teams is always exciting to watch, you just never know who's going to dominate the next scrum or breakdown.

The last few rounds of the tournament will bring plenty action and I'm sure a few plot twists along the way. We will be looking forward to more massive hits and some magic from the wingers out wide!

Who are you backing to take the title? Will the defending champs make one last run for silverware or will there be a new victor?

Players to Watch:

James Tedder is performing consistently for Ikeys at flyhalf and centre, nailing his kicks, setting up excellent tries and just straight up beasting in general.

Munier Hartzenberg showing us some of his electric pace and agility in last weeks clash against Tuks. Hopefully the winger continues to burn his defenders!

Aidynn Cupido chipped one over the defence in the midfield, regathers, dummies the fullback and outpaced the wingers to the chalk. This without a doubt puts the centre on the radar!
